Sympetrum ambiguum (in copula) – lateral

A common late-season dragonfly in North Texas, this is a pair of Sympetrum ambiguum in copula (also known as the “wheel position”). They mate in this position and members of this genus then remain connected (in tandem), while they hover over the water, the female tapping the surface of the water to release the newly-fertilized eggs. This is a form of contact mate-guarding.
